Kernei’s Mostheuriger

Today we visit Marianne Muckenhammer and listen to the story of how the Gasthof Mostheuriger came to be.

She tells us that she has been running the inn since fall 2007 and that the rooms were added in 2012. Alfred Muckenhammer decided to do all this when they stopped going to the weekly market, which meant that customer contact was declining. The owners had been toying with the idea of opening a Mostheuriger for a long time and before the 400-year-old farmhouse became a listed building, the decision was made to rededicate it and Kernei’s Mostheuriger was born.

What makes the company so unique and special?

I asked Marianne how she would describe her business. She said it was simply a traditional country inn with small rooms for rent and home-style cooking with regional ingredients. They have a total of 11 rooms in a classic country style with lots of comfort as well as 3 cozy dining rooms. Of course, the Salettl, which is furnished in old wood and used for all kinds of events, is not to be missed.

Thanks to its location in the village center, you have a view of the surrounding meadows and the village church. What’s special is that they use a lot of produce from their own farm – including game, pork, beef and trout. Slaughtering takes place in the immediate vicinity and everything is then prepared in the farm’s own butcher’s shop. The fruit – some of which comes from the farm’s own fields – is processed into fine brandies. And recently, these can be enjoyed in smaller groups in the new tasting room. Kernei’s Mostheuriger is a family business and will soon be passing into the 2nd generation.

How do you manage it all?

Of course, you also ask yourself why customers keep coming back and whether they have something here that you can’t find anywhere else. In fact, the answer is quite clear. The guests come because of the love of regionality, the home-made products, the friendly staff and the direct open access to the in-house farm. The guest garden with its fruit trees is also a lovely place to view and enjoy the local produce.

Of course, we also want to know why the location was chosen here and not somewhere else. That is quite clear: Austria simply has a good reputation, a good standard, many opportunities and is known for its tradition of craftsmanship. Even if our home country sometimes has a small structure with a lot of bureaucracy, the many regulations have the advantage of creating a high sense of security.

With 6 full-time employees and 7-8 part-time staff, the well-coordinated team works very harmoniously together. They are currently even looking for a kitchen assistant to support the team with smaller jobs. This person should of course be stress-resistant, but also have a friendly and pleasant demeanor.

Unforgettable moments are a must!

In fact, there are also unforgettable and funny moments in everyday life at the hotel. A guest once left his room to smoke a cigarette on the balcony at the end of the corridor, but unfortunately forgot his room card in the room and the door slammed shut! So he had to go to the bar to get a new key, but to the astonished looks of the guests because he was only wearing underpants.

The most important thing at the end!

At the end we wanted to know if there was anything else to tell and Marianne said that the business has the AMA seal of approval for the food and products it produces and is even aiming for the “Salzburg schmeckt” certificate for various dishes.

Her final tips for the nature village of Anthering are the herb garden in summer and the swing path for families, which are always worth a visit.
