In Search of Harmony: What Mozart and the Moor Have in Common

When you think of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, what usually comes to mind are opulent ballrooms, classical music, white wigs, or the clatter of carriages on Salzburg’s cobblestone streets. But away from the hustle and bustle of court life, Mozart found a source of strength: nature. We’ll rediscover this on our excursion to the nature village of Anthering, one of Salzburg’s eight city villages. Anyone traveling through this region will quickly realize that culture, health, and nature have gone hand in hand for centuries.

Mozart’s “Green Breaks”

Although Mozart was a city dweller who loved social life, he needed to retreat into nature to fuel his creativity. During the summer months, he liked to “escape” from the city’s narrow streets to the countryside. He enjoyed renting a place in Vienna’s rural suburbs to compose in garden houses. There, the symmetry of the plants, the birdsong, and the tranquility inspired him to create melodious tunes. The sounds of nature are also reflected in his music.

Mozart and the Tame Star

The musical genius had always been a great animal lover: On May 17, 1784, a new pet joined his dog, canary, and horse. Mozart’s cash book contains the following entry: “Bird Stahr, 34 Kr.” Directly below that, Mozart notated the melody whistled by the star in musical notation and wrote next to it: “That was beautiful!”

He was so fascinated by this animal—a true muse—that when it died in 1787, he even dedicated a poem to it, which he wrote down in his own hand in his journal.

The poem was first published in 1828 in Leipzig in Georg Nikolaus von Nissen’s *Biography of W.A. Mozart*.

Why does it seem so sad? Because Mozart is working through his own personal grief in it (his father, Leopold, had died shortly before) and, at the same time, coming to terms with the tragedy of sudden death.

Discover the treasures of nature together

On our herb walks, you will immerse yourself in the world of wild plants – right on our doorstep. Together with herbalist Sophie Winkler (Sophia Botanika), we will discover which herbs grow by the wayside, how to recognize them and what we can use them for

In between, we will fortify ourselves with a small snack and then collect our finds in the bags we have brought with us. A detailed script will later help you to consolidate what you have learned at your leisure. If you like, you can visit the Anthering herb garden afterwards and get to know over 300 different plants.

As always, families with children are very welcome.

Briefly introduced

The hike is led by qualified herbalist Sophie Winkler. She loves roaming the wilderness and collecting herbs, buds and flowers, as well as using them in a variety of ways. With her blog sophiabotanika.com and many workshops, she imparts her knowledge in an authentic and inspiring way – and makes you want to become more aware of nature.

The Anthering Social Association is once again hosting an entertaining evening entitled “5 o’clock tea at seven” on Thursday, April 23, 2026. It starts at 7:00 pm at Kernei’s Mostheuriger in the Salettl.

DJ Bunny will provide the musical atmosphere. Look forward to a cozy evening with music, a good atmosphere and a convivial get-together. The entrance fee is 7 euros.

Antheringer Schaukelweg: the perfect excursion destination for the whole family

For variety, fun & action!

Our swing trail has attracted many families from near and far to Anthering in recent years, because hiking here is great fun for the whole family! Fun and variety are provided by the fun swing stations: Here, children can ride on “wild horses”, conquer a “pirate barge” or test their strength on “Hercules”.

Together with the little ones, parents can relax on the Hollywood swing or in the bird’s nest. Of course, there are also plenty of rest stops so that all hikers can really enjoy their time in nature and have something to eat in between.

The Anthering swing trail in detail

The Anthering swing trail starts and ends at the Anthering kindergarten at Schmiedingerstraße 3. There are also plenty of parking spaces available here. In total, the Anthering swing trail is around 4 km long (there and back) and has 6 varied swing stations along the way. It is particularly suitable for children of kindergarten and primary school age, but can also be used with all-terrain baby carriages.

By the way, if you have the time and a bit of stamina, you can of course combine both trails! Comfortable seating offers adults a breather while the children swing.

After the hike, Anthering’s restaurants offer plenty of opportunities to quench your hunger and thirst.

In this bike wrenching workshop, you will learn how to identify and fix small problems on your bike yourself. You don’t need any previous technical knowledge, but you should enjoy wrenching!

Together we will look for faults on a bike and check what is important: tires, brakes, handlebars, lights, reflectors, air pressure and chain. The workshop will be led by Bernhard Kreuzer from Veloserv.

The Anthering Advent market took place on November 29, 2025 and once again transformed the town center into an atmospheric setting full of pre-Christmas spirit. We would like to thank the numerous exhibitors for their varied offerings and all visitors for coming and enjoying the wonderful time together.

On August 15, the feast of “Maria Wurzweih”, the Anthering herb women and men celebrate their traditional herb garden festival. After the church service at 10:30 a.m. with the blessing of herbs and distribution of the herb bushes, lovingly homemade herbal products are offered for sale in the garden until 3:00 p.m.. There will also be culinary delicacies to refresh body and soul.

The herb garden festival is the highlight of the herb garden year. Throughout the year, the “herb witches” dry a wide variety of herbs and blend them into exquisite teas, as well as producing creams, oxalic oils, tinctures, fragrant herbal oils, herbal pillows and many other healthy herbal specialties. The day before the festival, fresh herbs are collected from nature and the garden and used to make up to 500 bunches and beautiful wreaths.

The diversity of the plants makes the Anthering herb garden something very special. More than 300 herbs are cultivated and cared for here. The medicinal herb area comprises 12 beds for respiratory, cardiovascular, digestive, urinary tract, skin and hair, men’s and women’s ailments, immune system, nerves, bones and joints. In the cottage garden, vegetables and flowers grow together in harmony, just like in grandmother’s day. A large raised bed is planted with a wide variety of vegetables and matching herbs in mixed cultivation and the herb spiral displays a wide range of culinary herbs with special features such as spice tea, broad leaf cress and spice fennel.

Visitors are invited to enjoy the garden with all its bright colors and tart and sweet scents. The flowers attract numerous bees, bumblebees and butterflies. The herb garden is freely accessible at all times and invites you to look, sniff, discover and relax. The little break under the lime tree next to the frog pond is a blessing for body, mind and soul.

On 14 June 2025, Anthering was all about health: under the motto “G’sund im Ort: Ein Dorf versorgt sich selbst” (“Healthy in the village: a village takes care of itself”), a diverse health day was held at the Voglwirt culture and event center as part of the “Healthy Community” initiative. RTS accompanied the event on video and captured the special atmosphere of the day.

Expert presentations, information stands and exhibitors from Anthering impressively demonstrated how a municipality can actively contribute to the health promotion of its citizens – with a great deal of commitment, regional expertise and a lively community. The resulting video highlights the highlights of the event and offers exciting insights into a forward-looking health concept directly from the town.

That was the 6th Night of Music in Anthering

The Querbeat music festival has been taking place in Anthering since 2014 and has since become well established in the town. The event is held every two years. Musicians from Anthering and groups with a connection to the village perform on the village square and in various venues. The aim is to make the musical diversity of Anthering visible and audible – with a deliberate mix of styles, in other words Querbeat. The festival is a good opportunity for restaurants to showcase their establishments. Music groups, in turn, have the opportunity to perform in front of a local audience and present their music to a wide audience.

On Saturday, July 5, 2025, the 6th Night of Music took place in Anthering – louder, more colorful, more surprising than ever! For the 6th time, the center of Anthering was transformed into a big stage. After kicking off with the music band on the village square, the event continued across the town: different locations, different sounds – from rock to traditional, from quiet to rousing. Local gastronomy, familiar locations and unusual corners become the backdrop for an evening full of music, encounters and good food.

Church choir with the choir community

The church choir with the choir community under the direction of Waltraud Nagl presents the “Mainz Mass” – a modern work that reinterprets traditional mass parts such as Kyrie, Gloria, Credo and Agnus Dei in a contemporary, sonorous language. Woody’s Folkhouse

Folk music at its best! The five-piece band around the legendary “Woody” inspires with folk and beat classics from the 60s, Irish folk, American blues and Austro-pop hits. Acoustically arranged songs from Bob Dylan to Neil Young and unusual instruments such as ukulele, bodhrán and dobro!

The mixed choir VocAnth under the direction of Ulli Baumann was founded in 2011. It is particularly pleasing that the choir has developed into a generational choir. The singers enjoy singing across the centuries, from classical choral literature and folk songs to pop and pop music.
